Translation Exercise # 02

Here is the review for our today’s translation exercise:

(1) “Love to God is the very foundation of religion. To engage in His service merely from hope of reward or fear of punishment would avail nothing. Open apostasy would not be more offensive to God than hypocrisy and mere formal worship” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 523.1).

(2) “Any wise individual that would make an enduring, prosperous and a happy marriage—a peculiarly exemplary home here on earth—should see to it, just from now, that they strive by the grace of God not only to discover, deploy and enhance the quality growth of their spouse’s potential; but also should do whatever it takes in their God-given power to complementarily supply their lack” (Pastor Ken, A Free Talk to SDA Youth, Aug. 2016).

A Free Talk to SDA Youth, Aug. 2016).

(3) “I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge. For the second time in two weeks, police officers who put their lives on the line for ours every day were doing their job when they were killed in a cowardly and reprehensible assault. These are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop” (Barack Obama, July 17, 2016).

(4) “Samuel Beckett’s friends suspected that he was a genius, yet no one knew . . . how his abilities would be deployed” (Richard Ellmann).

  • Translation: “Marafiki wa Samuel Beckett walidhani kwamba yeye alikuwa mtu mwenye kipaji maalum, hata hivyo hakuna yeyote aliyefahamu… jinsi ambavyo uwezo wake huo ungeweza kutumika” (Richard Ellmann).

(5) “Closely allied to gossip is the covert insinuation, the sly innuendo, by which the unclean in heart seek to insinuate the evil they dare not openly express. Every approach to these practices the youth should be taught to shun as they would shun the leprosy” (Education, p. 236.3).
